The Opp Depot, built in 1928 and fully restored in 2017, is located at 200 South Main Street. You are welcome to tour this beautiful landmark during business hours (Monday – Friday, 9:00 A. M. – 5:00 P. M.). This building may also be rented for special events (call Opp City Hall at 334-493-4572, Ext. 1). Be sure to “take in” the Opp mural which is located directly across the street from the Opp Depot. This mural, painted by Wes Hardin and Katie Hughes, “celebrates the story of Opp.”
Opp’s hidden gem is Frank Jackson State Park located at 100 Jerry Adams Drive (334-493-6988). You can hike the trails, fish, and picnic under the pavilion. If you enjoy camping, you may rent one of the park’s cabins, or camp in one of the primitive or RV sites.
During the months of May – August, the Opp Chamber of Commerce hosts the Downtown Get Downs on the third Friday of each month on Main Street. These events feature musical entertainment and a variety of vendors.
If you are looking to enjoy some family fun during the fall, Opp is the place to be. The Downtown Redevelopment Authority hosts Harvest Days in Downtown Opp each Saturday in October, with the culminating event being Opp Fest on the final Saturday of the month.
Don’t miss out on the most unique rodeo around—the Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo. This event, founded by J. P. Jones in 1960, is held the fourth weekend of March at Channell-Lee Stadium (301 Jeffcoat Avenue) and includes the Rattlesnake Rodeo 5-K Run, musical entertainment, children’s activities, arts and crafts, vendors galore, snake races, a buck dancing contest, and a greasy pole climbing contest. You won’t be disappointed!!! South Alabama Speedway, located at 189 Highway 52 in Kinston, hosts Rattler Weekend each March to “kick off” the Opp Rattlesnake Rodeo.
If you are visiting Opp or Covington County during the month of December, you’ll definitely want to plan a visit to Candyland. This event, hosted by the Andalusia Chamber of Commerce and the City of Andalusia, is a winter wonderland where your family can create memories to last a lifetime.
