
Mr. Lee was born at Furman, Wilcox County, Alabama, in 1871 and lived on his father’s farm until he graduated from Furman Academy. By examination, he entered the Sophomore Class at the University of Alabama in 1892. Upon completing his Junior year, Lee went home to take charge of his father’s plantation interests, because of his father’s ill health.
In 1903 he was married to Miss Eliza Bythewood Stallworth, daughter of Mr. Garland Goode Stallworth of Beatrice, Alabama. To this union was born one son, Goode.
In 1910, Mr. Lee became a teacher, first at Drewny, then at East Brewton, Polland, and Red Level. In 1918, he returned to the University of Alabama as an instructor in the mathematics department. He held the A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University. He taught at Georgiana for five years; the in 1923 he became Superintendent of Opp City Schools, serving until 1946. After his retirement, he became Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce; he pushed a project for naming 331 the most direct route to the Gulf Coast. He worked for the establishment of WAMI.
Mr. Lee was a Charter Member of the Opp Rotary Club, serving as President 1944-45. He was an active member of the First Methodist Church, serving as the teacher of the Men’s Bible Class and also the board of Stewards.
Superintendent Lee was capable and efficient school executive a man of distinguished scholarship and ability.
Profess H.N. Lee died December 1, 1959, in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was living with son, Goode. Funeral services were at First Methodist Church in Opp and burial is in Opp City Cemetery with his wife Eliza. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1978.
