Mr. Hart was born in 1844, the son of Daniel and Katie Hart of the Falco community, and upon this death in 1924, he was buried there in the Beda Cemetery.
Alex Hart, “The Father of Opp”, probably did more in his lifetime to develop the town of Opp than did any other person.
For one thing, he originally purchased from Henry Robbins the tract of land upon which the City of Opp now rest. He hired W.O. Gilmore to survey the site for a town. The Hart Addition was named after him in honor of the work he did.
Later, he gave property for the first park in Opp, located on College Street and Park Avenue. He had the park named “Delia” after a former sweetheart.
In addition, he served on the first town council in 1901-1905 and later served as the third Mayor of Opp from 1905 to 1907.
The Hart Home, located on East Stewart Avenue, has been restored by the Opp Historical Society. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.
