Davy James Lindsey was born on June 2, 1954, in Coffee County, Alabama, near Danley
Crossroads, to David and Rebecca Lindsey. His early education began at Gantt Elementary, a
modest two-room school serving grades 1 through 6. During his second-grade year, his family
relocated near Fleeta School, and Davy went on to attend Opp County Elementary School
through sixth grade. He then enrolled at Bethune Junior High School in Andalusia, Alabama, for
seventh grade. After school integration in 1966, he transferred to Opp Middle School for eighth
grade and ultimately graduated from Opp High School in 1972.
While at Opp High, Davy was a standout athlete, participating in football– where he earned
honors as a running back– he also played basketball, baseball, and ran track and field.
On January 22, 1973, Davy enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving four years and
completing a tour of duty in Thailand from May 1975 to April 1976. In 1982, he continued his
military career by joining the U.S. Army Reserves, where he served with distinction for 22 years
until retiring in 2004. During his reserve service, he took part in training assignments in both
Korea and Germany.
In pursuit of technical expertise, Davy attended Douglas MacArthur Technical School, earning a
diploma in Industrial Electricity in 1981. He then embarked on a successful Civil Service career–
working 28 years as an electrician with the Department of Public Works and 11 years as a
Supply Technician for the Fort Rucker Fire Department, retiring in 2009. Even in retirement, he
continued to contribute, working as a Receiving Clerk for Shaw Industries in Andalusia until
retiring again in 2017.
Davy has been married to his beloved wife, Shirley Lindsey, for 47 years. Together, they raised
three children– Steven Lashaun, Kristy Michelle, and Hannah Danae Lindsey– and are the
proud grandparents of nine: Ariana Brooks, Keyunna Davis, Jasmine Lindsey, Steven Elijah
Lindsey, William Davis, Bryce Davis, Evan Davis, Ryshaun Carpenter, and Aliyannah Carpenter.
He is the brother of Linda Sue Rayborn, Carolyn Walker, and Jacqueline Hilmes, and is
preceded in death by siblings Timothy Dewayne Rogers and Debbie Jean Teague. Davy is
surrounded by a large and loving extended family, including many aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews, and close friends.
Faith has always been central to Davy’s life. He served as an Elder at Abundant Life Church
and was later ordained as Pastor of Florala Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) in Florala,
Alabama. A natural leader, Davy also served as Secretary of the Opp Unit of the NAACP and
was elected City Councilman for the City of Opp from 2000 to 2012.
Even in retirement, Davy remains committed to serving his community. He currently serves as
Chairman of the Opp Housing Board and is the Director of the F.A.I.T.H. Program– an initiative
dedicated to supporting children ages 5-18 in academic development and community
engagement.
